What Are Neuromodulators? How Do They Work?

Botox is a type of medication known as a neuromodulator. Essentially, it changes the way that signals are transmitted between neurons. Botox smooths wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles that cause wrinkles.

Botox works best on a specific type of wrinkle called a dynamic wrinkle. These wrinkles are formed when you make facial expressions. Botox works very well on smile lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, and other similar wrinkles.

Botox is one of the most popular neuromodulators, but it is not the only one available for cosmetic use. At Henderson Women’s Care, we also offer Xeomin®, another powerful neuromodulator that produces similar results to Botox.

What’s the Difference Between Botox and Xeomin?

Botox and Xeomin are very similar treatments. Both are neuromodulators and work by relaxing facial muscles that cause wrinkles. Both Botox and Xeomin contain botulinum toxin A as their active ingredient. Both treatments are FDA-approved for cosmetic use.

The main difference between these two treatments is their formulation. Botox contains several proteins in addition to the botulinum toxin. Xeomin’s formulation does not use these proteins. Some patients who have reacted to Botox may be able to use Xeomin safely. Xeomin may also be a good choice for patients that have developed a resistance to Botox.

To ensure you receive the proper botulinum toxin treatment for your needs, we’ll perform a careful examination and consultation before your treatment. Dr. Tanita is very familiar with each injectable product we use and will use your unique characteristics to choose the product that will work best.

You’ll receive a few small injections in specific areas of the face. The injection process only takes a few minutes.

If you have had an allergic reaction to Botox in the past or no longer get ideal results from Botox after consistent use, Xeomin may be more suitable for you. Typically, Botox results for treating dynamic wrinkles become noticeable after the first treatment itself. But this depends upon a number of factors such as the intensity and type of wrinkles that you want to treat. After a personalized consultation, Dr. Tanita can provide you with a better estimate of how many treatments it might take for you to see ideal results.

Botox temporarily relaxes your muscles to treat dynamic wrinkles, with the results typically lasting between 3-4 months. After this period, you can decide if you want to maintain your results with follow-up treatments. This gives you more flexibility and control over your new look.

Xeomin can typically last between 3-4 months, with factors such as your body’s response to the treatment influencing this duration.

While Botox does not require any downtime, you may still experience minimal side effects such as redness, bruising, and swelling across the treatment site, but they generally wear off on their own within a few days. Dr. Tanita provides you with aftercare instructions to help minimize these side effects and promote optimal outcomes.

Xeomin does not cause serious side effects or lead to any downtime, but you may still feel minor and temporary side effects such as tenderness, redness, and bruising around the injection site. These subside in a few days. You should also follow post-treatment instructions to relieve any discomfort.

If you want to reduce dynamic wrinkles such as frown lines and crow’s feet that are caused by regular muscle movements, Botox might be a good option for you. After a detailed consultation, Dr. Tanita will help you determine whether Botox is a suitable fit for your aesthetic goals.

We'd love to hear from you!
