Prenatal Care in Las Vegas

Preferably, prenatal care should begin before you become pregnant. If you are planning on becoming pregnant, you should schedule a complete checkup with your provider to ensure you are in good health and do not have any conditions that may impact your pregnancy. Your provider may suggest discussing genetic testing with a genetic counselor prior to becoming pregnant if you or your partner has a family history of genetic disorders.

Prenatal care can help to reduce complications during pregnancy and delivery. Medical care throughout your pregnancy monitors vital information and changes in your body that could be signaling risks to your pregnancy and health.

Before you become pregnant, begin taking prenatal vitamins containing folic acid, calcium, and iron. Folic acid can help prevent issues with your pregnancy often before you know you are pregnant. If you become pregnant before you start taking prenatal vitamins, start taking them as soon as you know you are pregnant.

Helping You Take Care of Yourself During Pregnancy

Start taking care of your developing baby as soon as you become pregnant. Take only necessary medications recommended by your provider, including over-the-counter medicines or herbal supplements.

During this time, you may need to consider changing some lifestyle choices, such as:

  • Stop smoking
  • Don’t drink alcohol or take recreational drugs
  • Limit caffeine
  • Eat a healthy diet

Unfortunately, certain foods are off limits to pregnant mothers as they can be life-threatening to an unborn baby or cause congenital disabilities or miscarriage. Avoid:

  • Soft, unpasteurized cheeses
  • Unpasteurized milk, juices, or ciders
  • Raw eggs and foods containing them
  • Raw or undercooked meats, fish, or shellfish
  • Processed meats, such as hot dogs or deli meats
  • Fish high in mercury, such as shark, tuna, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, etc.

Manage the Side Effects of Pregnancy

While pregnancy is often a joyous time in your life, it can also cause side effects that are not so pleasant. If you experience these side effects or others, please talk to one of our providers to determine how we can help you alleviate your discomfort.

Side effects of pregnancy can include:

  • Morning sickness (especially early in pregnancy)
  • Heartburn
  • Constipation
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Backache
  • Fatigue

When Should I Schedule My Obstetrics and Prenatal Care Appointments?

Ideally, you should schedule your first prenatal appointment as soon as your pregnancy has been confirmed. You will likely be scheduled for your appointment around six to eight weeks into your pregnancy. However, your provider may want to see you sooner if you:

  • Have existing medical conditions
  • Have had problems with previous pregnancies
  • Have symptoms such as vaginal bleeding, abdominal pains, or severe nausea or vomiting

What Can I Expect During Obstetrics and Prenatal Care?

At Henderson Women’s Care, Dr. Tanita performs each prenatal examination procedure to ensure the health and individual needs of each patient and their unborn child are addressed. However, here are some general steps you can expect.

You may need to provide some general information for your healthcare provider, so gather that information prior to your first visit, including:

  • Date of last menstrual cycle, gynecological history, and any past pregnancies
  • Personal and family medical history
  • Medications and supplements
  • Travel history

After our team greets you for check-in, Dr. Tanita will ensure you are comfortable, answer any last questions, and perform your examination.

During your first visit, our team will perform a complete checkup, check your vital signs, run blood and urine tests, and take your medical history. Depending on your history or other factors, we may perform other examinations and tests. We may also complete a pelvic exam during this visit.

Vital signs indicate your health and the status of your essential body functions, like heartbeat, breathing rate, and blood pressure. We will closely monitor these throughout your pregnancy, noting any changes that could signify underlying problems. During this time, your provider will ask for the date of your last menstrual period to help calculate your baby’s due date.

Your provider may listen for the baby’s heartbeat depending on how far along your pregnancy is. Typically, the heartbeat can’t be heard or seen until around six or seven weeks.

The number of doctor visits you have will depend on whether you are experiencing a high-risk pregnancy. Typically, scheduled prenatal visits are:

  • Every four to six weeks during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy
  • Every two to four weeks, from 28 to 36 weeks
  • Weekly from 36 weeks to delivery

During your visits, our team will check your weight and blood pressure. We may also measure the size and shape of your uterus to determine fetal growth. We will conduct various important prenatal tests throughout your pregnancy.
